Ruben and Melissa: how their passport-style wedding invitation came to be

Some wedding invitations simply announce a date. Others tell a story. This is the story of a couple who loved to travel, got engaged during a trip to Greece, and knew from the start that their invitation had to be something different: a little passport that would give their guests a glimpse of the journey they were about to begin.

What they could never have imagined was that this passport-style wedding invitation would eventually become the project that gave rise to Specially Love.

A love story that began with travel

For them, travelling was more than just a hobby. It was part of their story as a couple. So when it was time to plan their wedding, they wanted their invitation to reflect who they were rather than look like just another wedding invitation.

There was also one detail that made the idea even more special: they had got engaged during a trip to Greece. Travel was already part of their love story, so turning the invitation into a passport made perfect sense.

The idea was simple, but it had a lot of meaning behind it: they wanted their guests to receive something that would make them think of a journey and, in a way, give them a glimpse of the experience they were about to share with them on their wedding day.

A wedding invitation turned into a passport

From that idea, the invitation concept was born. Instead of designing it as a traditional wedding invitation, we designed it as a travel passport, adapting its visual elements to the couple's story and the details of their wedding.

The goal wasn't to create a passport simply because it looked original. What mattered was that the concept had meaning for them: their travels, Greece, and all the experiences they had shared as a couple were behind the choice.

And that's one of the things we love most about this type of invitation: design can be about much more than aesthetics. It can become a way of telling your story and showing who you are even before the wedding day arrives.

There was another member of the family who couldn't be left out of the story: Xulin, their dog.

Xulin was going to be part of the wedding, and they wanted to find a way to include him in the invitation too. But instead of simply adding a photo of him, we looked for a way to incorporate him into the passport concept itself.

The solution? A personalised Xulin stamp, created especially for the invitation.

It was a small detail, but that's exactly what made it work. A little nod that probably only took a few seconds to understand, but made the invitation feel even more personal to them.

Because personalising an invitation doesn't always mean changing everything. Sometimes, all it takes is a small detail that holds a special meaning for the couple.

An invitation that also helped them organise their wedding

But the invitation wasn't just about the design. It also became a useful tool for organising some aspects of the wedding.

They already had a pretty clear idea of what they wanted their celebration to be like and, instead of using a generic confirmation form, they tailored the RSVP questions to their actual needs.

No dress code… and a few surprises

One thing they knew for sure was that they didn't want to set a dress code. They wanted every guest to choose what to wear and didn't want to impose too many rules when it came to getting ready for the wedding.

And, sure enough, more than one guest managed to surprise them with their outfit.

Sometimes, giving your guests the freedom to do things their own way is also part of what makes a wedding special.

Children weren't part of their plans

They also knew that no children would be attending the wedding. So there was no point in asking guests whether they would be bringing children in their RSVP form.

It may seem like a small detail, but it's precisely one of the advantages of being able to customise an RSVP form: asking only for the information you actually need.

Who needed a bus?

Another question they did need to ask was about transportation.

They included a question in the RSVP form to find out which guests would be using the bus. With the responses, they could keep track of the numbers and get a much clearer estimate of how many people would need transportation.

That way, a simple question in the RSVP form became useful information for a very specific organisational decision: how many buses to book.

And what if someone wanted to stay overnight…

Some guests might also need accommodation after the celebration. They had a few trusted hotels in the area that they could recommend.

Having this information directly in the invitation made it easier for guests to explore their options while allowing the couple to keep much of the practical wedding information in one place.

And yes, Specially Love was also at the wedding

But there's one particular detail that makes this story even more special to us: the Specially Love team was also invited to the wedding.

We weren't simply the people who had helped create their invitation. It was a friendship that began at a dog park and eventually brought us to the most important day of their lives.

And yes, that's us (María and Guille).

The wedding that gave rise to Specially Love

After creating that invitation, we realised something: they probably weren't the only couple looking for an invitation that was different.

There were couples who wanted their invitation to reflect their story, their hobbies, their travels, or the little things that made them unique. Couples who didn't want to simply choose a design and fill in a few details.

They wanted their invitation to be part of their wedding.

And that's how Specially Love began.

This couple's story included travelling, a proposal in Greece, a dog named Xulin, very specific decisions about how they wanted to organise their wedding, and all those little details that only make sense when you know their story.

And that's exactly what made their invitation special.

It didn't need to look like anyone else's. It needed to look like them.
